Longtime readers of QST will certainly remember the cartoons of Phil Glidersleeve, W1CJD (ex-1ANE) SK. Known affectionately as "Gil," he drew more than 1500 cartoons for the ARRL, many of them appearing on the pages of QST, like the one shown here. I grew up in northern Middlesex County and I have only one memory of 'Gil' chatting with my uncle Jean, who was the traffic Cop on Main St Middletown Conn. during my childhood (uncle 'Norm' was the guard at the Middletown Savings Bank, so we did the 'rounds' on Friday nights). I was I think 5 years old at the time, and little did I know I too was to become a Ham and "discover" the joy of 'Gil' cartoons and how true they still are!
Click here for a photo of 'Gil'.
I don't have a date for this, but judging from the suit and tie style, probably late 1940's.
Get a copy of this book, well worth the time and the "Good Feeling" afterwards!
